Muddy Creek’s Commitment to Safe Spaces for All Students
Dear Muddy Creek Families,
The Corvallis School District and Muddy Creek Charter School are committed to each student’s success. We also partner with our families and community on behalf of students. To achieve our commitments to our students and community, we maintain a focus on treating all with dignity and respect.
We recognize that upcoming changes at the federal level may cause uncertainty and concern, particularly for our immigrant and LGBTQIA2S+ families. While we cannot predict every shift in policy, we want to assure you that our core values—equity and inclusivity—remain constant. Our schools are safe spaces where every student is given the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
To maintain these values, it is important to clarify the roles and responsibilities of our schools on behalf of our immigrant and LGBTQIA2S+ communities.
The Inavale Community Partner/MCCS policies below provide clear protections for our students:
- Policy AC, Nondiscrimination, protects every student from harassment, discrimination, and inequitable treatment based on gender identity or other factors.
- Policy ACB, Every Student Belongs, emphasizes that our schools must be safe and inclusive spaces for all, regardless of identity.
- Policy JOB, Personally Identifiable Information, safeguards students’ private information, ensuring their identities are respected and protected.
Student Rights and Immigration Status
- All children in the United States have a constitutional right to equal access to public educational opportunities regardless of their immigration status or the status of their parent (Plyler vs. Doe, 1982).
- Our shcool does not ask for, or document students’ immigration status when students enroll.
- Even if we learned about a student’s immigration status, we would not volunteer the information to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
What Will Staff Do if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Shows Up?
- Muddy Creek staff will not share information about a student’s immigration status.
- Staff will contact the Executive Director or Immigration Resource Advocate immediately.
- ICE officials cannot enter our buildings without the Executive Director.
- The Executive Director or CSD Superintendent has the right to consult with legal counsel and take steps to ensure students’ and staff’s emotional and physical safety before ICE officials enter any of our buildings.
